The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has remained the sole buyer of petrol from the Dangote Refinery despite earlier announcements suggesting that oil marketers could start purchasing directly. This exclusive arrangement continues due to a pending agreement between Dangote and NNPC, which prevents marketers from engaging directly with the refinery for petrol purchases until the agreement is terminated. However, the federal government has indicated that once the agreement is resolved, marketers will be able to purchase petrol directly from the Dangote Refinery under mutually negotiated terms.
This situation is evolving, and it is expected that once the transition is complete, the sale of petrol will no longer be mediated exclusively by NNPC, potentially promoting greater market competition and efficiency.
