The Ghanaian activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was detained during an anti-illegal mining (galamsey) protest, has been denied bail multiple times. Barker-Vormawor, a leader of the Democracy Hub group, was arrested alongside other demonstrators in Accra for allegedly engaging in unlawful assembly and assaulting a public officer during the protest.
Despite his legal team’s argument that his detention violates constitutional rights to peaceful protest, the court has refused bail due to his ongoing trial for treason.
While Barker-Vormawor remains in custody, other activists involved in the same protest have been granted bail under various conditions. The protests were aimed at addressing the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, which threatens Ghana’s water resources.
