The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) and its leader, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, have been involved in a legal case against Nigerian blogger and social media influencer Funke Ashekun. In January 2024, a U.S. court ordered Ashekun to pay $50,000 in damages for defaming MFM and its pastors, though Olukoya himself was not a plaintiff in the case. The lawsuit was filed by three U.S.-based MFM pastors who alleged that Ashekun had spread defamatory statements about the church and its leadership. Ashekun, who regularly speaks out against sexual abuse in religious settings, denied the defamation claims and clarified that her remarks were not directed at Olukoya specifically. She also disputed the extent of the ruling, noting that only MFM USA, and not the individual plaintiffs, were awarded damages.
