The Nigerian national grid has collapsed for the third time in just seven days, resulting in widespread power outages across the country. This incident, which took place on Monday, follows earlier collapses that had left much of the nation in darkness. The latest collapse occurred around 6:18 PM, plunging power generation to zero in many areas, impacting states serviced by various distribution companies, including the Abuja and Enugu Electricity Distribution Companies.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed the recent collapses to a fire at the Afam Power Station, which triggered a system destabilization. Despite the national grid being restored to a reduced output after the collapse, this recurring issue raises concerns about the resilience of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Many are now questioning the government’s efforts to address these persistent failures, particularly in light of increasing electricity tariffs.
