Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, recently urged Christians to prioritize aiding the poor over donating large sums to church construction projects. In a sermon addressing the current economic hardships faced by many in Nigeria, he emphasized the importance of using offerings to assist those in need rather than solely for church expenditures.
Kumuyi recounted the story of a pastor who advised his congregation to redirect their offerings toward helping their neighbors in financial distress. He expressed concern about the rising hunger and unemployment in the country, noting that while building the church is important, it should not come at the cost of neglecting those who are suffering. He highlighted the need for churches to allocate part of their funds for charitable purposes, reminiscent of practices from “the good old days” when more focus was placed on community support .
