Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently expressed concern that the current state of insecurity in Nigeria is worse than it was during his administration. He highlighted several factors contributing to the worsening situation, including the availability of weapons following the Nigerian civil war and the growing influence of groups like Boko Haram, which now have international terrorist connections.
He also emphasized that the government’s failure to adequately address underlying issues like unemployment, poverty, and lack of education has exacerbated insecurity, creating a breeding ground for insurgency. Obasanjo warned that unless Nigeria takes urgent steps to tackle the root causes of these issues, the security crisis will continue to deteriorate.
