Nigeria continues to supply 24-hour electricity to neighboring countries like Benin, Niger, and Togo, despite its ongoing challenges with power outages at home. This was confirmed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in a recent statement. TCN’s CEO, Sule Abdulaziz, acknowledged that these countries pay for the electricity they receive, while many Nigerians still experience inconsistent power supply. In some priority areas, referred to as “Band A,” citizens enjoy up to 22 hours of electricity daily, but others face less reliable service.
Despite the international power exports, Nigeria’s domestic electricity sector struggles with underinvestment and infrastructure issues. To address this, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued directives to limit power supplied to these neighboring nations to no more than 6% of the total national grid supply. This is aimed at improving availability for Nigerian consumers. The directive is set to last for six months before being reviewed.
