The Federal Government of Nigeria has dropped money laundering charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a key executive at Binance Holdings. The charges were officially withdrawn during a discreet hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which took place on October 23, 2024, just days before the scheduled October 25 court date. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed that Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen, was merely an employee of Binance and not personally responsible for the company’s financial activities that were under investigation. This development follows significant diplomatic pressure from the U.S., which sought to secure Gambaryan’s release after he had spent over seven months in detention.
This marks a crucial turning point in the case, especially as Gambaryan’s legal team had earlier expressed concerns about his poor health conditions during his imprisonment at Kuje Correctional Centre.
