Libyan authorities recently detained a group of 18 Nigerian and Nigerien nationals, including a child, due to immigration-related violations. This is part of Libya’s ongoing crackdown on irregular migration, a complex issue where many migrants attempt to reach Europe but often find themselves detained in Libya under harsh conditions. Libya’s Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM), in collaboration with local and international agencies, has been working to address these cases.
In the past months, over 100 Nigerian women and children have been repatriated by the Nigerian government in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), emphasizing humanitarian support for vulnerable groups. The Nigerian Mission in Libya has facilitated the safe return of thousands of Nigerians this year alone, with IOM’s assistance, highlighting the perilous situation for migrants in detention and underscoring the Nigerian government’s warnings against irregular migration due to associated risks.
