Senator Ireti Kingibe has issued a strong condemnation of the Nigerian government’s decision to arraign over 100 minors, aged 10 to 16, for their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests, where they voiced opposition to the economic hardships impacting their lives. “This shameful prosecution of our youth is not only unjust—it is a betrayal of our humanity and an assault on our future,” Kingibe stated, highlighting her concern for the treatment of young Nigerians who she believes should be protected, not punished, for expressing their frustrations.
Kingibe questioned, “When did we become a nation that turns against its own children—our very hope for tomorrow?” expressing deep disappointment over their alleged mistreatment and the charges, which include treason, a crime that carries the death penalty if convicted. She called on authorities and human rights bodies to take urgent action, insisting that “children deserve quality education, better healthcare, and protection,” not harsh penalties for exercising their constitutional rights.
Her powerful words reflect a broader concern for justice and compassion in Nigeria, as she urged leaders to focus on the underlying causes of discontent rather than punishing those who speak out. The senator further called on all mothers and women across Nigeria to protest this “disgraceful” treatment of the nation’s youth, asserting that “this cannot stand.”
