Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has spoken out regarding the future of star striker Viktor Gyökeres amid rising interest from top European clubs. In a recent statement, Varandas acknowledged that Gyökeres could leave the club if a suitor meets his release clause and the player decides to move on.
“I can’t promise anything,” Varandas remarked, signaling that while Sporting would like to keep Gyökeres, the club may ultimately have limited control if his release clause is activated. “If a club arrives and pays the release clause, and if he wants to go… he will go,” he explained.
Despite his candid admission, Varandas tempered fears of an imminent departure, stating, “But I do not think this will happen in January.” This suggests that Sporting expects to retain the Swedish forward at least through the current season, though the summer transfer window may bring renewed interest.
Gyökeres has been a standout performer for Sporting since joining, showcasing his goal-scoring ability and quickly becoming a key player in their lineup. However, his impressive form has inevitably drawn attention from wealthier clubs in major leagues, who may be willing to trigger his release clause to secure his talents.
For now, Sporting supporters can be reassured that Gyökeres is likely to remain in Lisbon through January, but his future beyond the season remains uncertain as clubs monitor his situation closely.
