Deji Adeyanju, a prominent Nigerian activist and lawyer, has stated his concerns over the growing economic difficulties in Nigeria, mainly following the recent fuel price increases. He criticized the Tinubu-led administration for exacerbating the suffering of Nigerians by removing fuel subsidies, a move that has caused petrol prices to soar to around N500 per liter. Adeyanju bitterly referred to the government as one of “renewed suffering,” mocking Tinubu’s campaign slogan, “Renewed Hope.”
Adeyanju argued that the government should aim to reduce fuel prices to levels last seen during the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) era, when fuel cost N68 per liter and the dollar was relatively stable. He emphasized that the removal of subsidies has worsened the cost of living for Nigerians, and he criticized the divided opposition for failing to present a unified front in the last election, which contributed to the current situation. He also warned that the ongoing hardships could persist if the opposition does not unite in future elections.
