The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed ongoing efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa, leader of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE), from Finland. Ekpa is seen as a significant figure in the Biafra separatist movement, which the Nigerian government considers a threat. The DHQ revealed that negotiations with the European Union (EU) are underway to bring him to Nigeria for prosecution over his activities, including his recent announcement of a planned declaration of the Biafra Republic in December 2024.
In response, Simon Ekpa has invited Nigerian officials, including Major General Edward Buba and Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, to attend the Biafra Convention in Finland, scheduled for November 29 to December 3, 2024. He argues that the government’s actions validate the legitimacy of the Biafra Government in Exile and has called for an open debate during the convention.
This development has reignited discussions around the Biafra movement, highlighting tensions between the Nigerian government and its critics on self-determination and national security.
