Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amidst the ongoing political tensions with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the FCT Minister. Speaking during the flag-off of the Trans-Kalabari Road project, Jonathan emphasized the importance of stability in Rivers State, calling it the “heart of the Niger Delta.” He urged both leaders to work together for the collective good of the state, warning that their conflict could destabilize not just the region but also the broader Niger Delta and beyond.
The crisis stems from a fallout between Wike and Fubara, which escalated last year. Despite earlier interventions by President Tinubu, tensions have resurfaced, marked by resignations of commissioners and confrontations in the state legislature. Jonathan criticized the growing trend of conflicts between governors and their successors, calling for peaceful transitions and cooperation to benefit citizens.
