The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France to collaborate on mining projects aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. This agreement focuses on the remediation of over 2,000 abandoned mining pits, environmental sustainability, and the diversification of critical mineral resources such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, essential for clean energy technologies.
Key elements of the partnership include co-financing joint projects, reducing mining’s environmental impact, and facilitating Franco-Nigerian student exchanges for skills and knowledge transfer. Both countries have committed to international best practices and improving transparency in project execution. The collaboration is expected to attract French investment to Nigeria’s mining sector and enhance local capacity through training and bilateral initiatives.
