Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a prominent Nigerian political figure, has publicly condemned the arrest of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, labeling the action as an abuse of police powers and a violation of democratic principles. In a statement shared via social media, Obi criticized the use of the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate dissenting voices, emphasizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression and upholding the rule of law.
Obi expressed deep concern over the misuse of police powers in what appears to be an attempt to silence Farotimi, describing it as a “grave assault on democracy and justice.” He highlighted that defamation should be addressed in civil courts rather than through police action, criticizing the weaponization of law enforcement to settle personal grievances.
Obi noted that as a public figure, he has faced defamation and insults but has never resorted to using the police to suppress criticism. He urged others to seek legal redress through appropriate channels. He demanded the unconditional release of Dele Farotimi and called on the police to uphold their constitutional duty to serve the people rather than narrow interests.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for a fairer and more democratic Nigeria, urging the police to act professionally and independently.
