Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has condemned the arrest of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi by the Nigerian police, likening their actions to the methods used by terrorists. Yesufu made this statement during a discussion on X (formerly Twitter), hosted by activist Omoyele Sowore.
“The way they abducted Farotimi is similar to how terrorists abduct Nigerians,” Yesufu remarked. “They took him from Lagos and transported him all the way to Ekiti by road. This is unacceptable.”
Farotimi, who faces charges of criminal defamation and cyberbullying in Ekiti State, was arrested in Lagos and moved across state lines by law enforcement officials. The arrest has sparked public outcry, with many questioning the legality of the charges, particularly as criminal defamation has been decriminalized under the Ekiti State Criminal Law of 2021.
Yesufu criticized the prolonged detention of Farotimi, noting that his bail application has been adjourned until December 20, 2024, by a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti. “This case is not just about Dele Farotimi; it’s about the growing pattern of governmental oppression against citizens,” she added.
The activist has been vocal on social media, highlighting what she describes as an abuse of power and calling for Farotimi’s immediate release. Her comments have fueled discussions about the state of human rights, freedom of speech, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of how criminal laws are applied inconsistently across Nigeria, with some regions enforcing laws that have been repealed elsewhere. Farotimi’s supporters argue that his prosecution is an attempt to silence dissenting voices in the country.
Public advocacy for Farotimi’s release continues to grow as human rights organizations and citizens demand accountability from the Nigerian government and law enforcement agencies.
