The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the completion of the National Identification Number (NIN) and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) linkage for all phone numbers in the country. This marks the conclusion of a policy that began in 2020, aiming to enhance national security and curb identity fraud. The NCC acknowledged the challenges Nigerians faced during the process but emphasized the benefits of the program, which ensures that every phone number is now tied to a verified NIN. This linkage improves the ability to track phone numbers involved in criminal activities, increasing accountability.
The NCC also highlighted plans to address fraud in mobile financial transactions by partnering with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to strengthen the security of mobile banking channels.
