Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has raised concerns over Elon Musk’s involvement in the political affairs of countries outside the United States, following the tech mogul’s political endorsements in Europe.
Musk, a prominent ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, has recently shown support for the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections, and called for the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. These actions have sparked unease among European leaders about external interference in domestic politics.
Prime Minister Støre stated, “I find it worrying that a man with enormous access to social media and huge economic resources involves himself so directly in the internal affairs of other countries. This is not the way things should be between democracies and allies.” He further emphasized that Norwegian politicians should distance themselves from Musk’s influence if he attempts to intervene in Norway’s political matters.
Musk, who was a major financial backer of Trump’s campaign, is also expected to play a role in advising the incoming administration on reducing the federal budget. However, his political actions in Europe have drawn concern from leaders who worry about the potential impact of his influence on national elections.
Despite facing internal criticism and low approval ratings, Støre remains resolute in his leadership, declaring his determination to lead his party into the upcoming parliamentary elections. “I’m very motivated to be party leader and prime minister, and to win the election,” he said.
As Musk continues to engage in international political discourse, his influence on global political landscapes remains a contentious issue.
