Football pundit Don Goodman has suggested that former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney consider joining Manchester City to rejuvenate his managerial career. Goodman’s remarks follow Rooney’s challenging start as manager of Birmingham City, with the club struggling in the English Championship since his appointment.
Goodman expressed empathy for Rooney, citing the mounting pressure the ex-England international has faced since taking over from John Eustace. Despite his celebrated playing career, Rooney’s managerial stint at Birmingham has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike, with results failing to meet expectations.
“I feel sorry for him,” Goodman said during a recent interview. “He’s a young manager trying to make his mark, but the circumstances at Birmingham aren’t doing him any favors. Maybe it’s time for a bold move.”
The suggestion to join Manchester City—albeit unconventional given Rooney’s history as a United legend—could be interpreted as a call for Rooney to seek mentorship under Pep Guardiola or to align himself with a club renowned for its resources and success.
Birmingham City currently languishes in mid-table after a series of disappointing performances, and Rooney’s tactics have been under scrutiny. Goodman’s comments may spark debate among football fans, especially considering the fierce rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City.
Rooney, who previously managed Derby County and DC United, has yet to respond publicly to Goodman’s suggestion.
