Osogbo, Osun State – The Department of State Services (DSS) has dismantled a suspected sleeper cell of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Osun State, apprehending ten individuals linked to the terror group in the town of Ilesha. The arrests followed a meticulous intelligence operation aimed at curbing extremist activities in the region.
According to security sources, the DSS acted on credible intelligence about the presence of ISWAP operatives planning coordinated attacks in southern Nigeria. The suspects were reportedly using Ilesha as a base to mobilize resources and recruit members.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, involved a strategic raid on multiple locations. DSS officials reportedly recovered incriminating materials, including communication devices, propaganda materials, and cash believed to be intended for financing operations.
A senior DSS official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the suspects had been under surveillance for weeks. “We intercepted communications that indicated their intent to destabilize key areas. This swift action has significantly disrupted their network,” the source said.
The arrest has heightened concerns over the spread of extremist activities beyond Nigeria’s northern region. Security analysts have warned that ISWAP’s growing influence could pose a significant threat to national stability if not effectively contained.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has commended the DSS for its vigilance and urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. “This development underscores the importance of collective security efforts. We must all play our part in safeguarding our communities,” he said in a statement.
The suspects are currently in DSS custody and are expected to face prosecution following further investigations. Authorities have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining security and dismantling terror networks across the country.
This latest operation marks a significant win in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism, demonstrating the critical role of intelligence and community cooperation in countering threats.
