The Kwara State Government has intensified efforts to address the worrying flood risks in riverine communities, especially in Patigi and Edu. As part of the campaign, the state has advised residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer, higher grounds to avoid the dangers posed by rising water levels due to seasonal rainfall and climate change.
In recent weeks, the government has launched a public awareness drive, collaborating with community leaders and royal figures, to educate residents about the risks of staying in flood zones. The state has also undertaken preventive measures like de-silting drainages, dredging the Asa River, and discouraging harmful environmental practices that contribute to flooding.
State officials are also advocating for the dredging of the River Niger, which is seen as a long-term solution to recurring floods in the region.
