ΦBerlin, Germany – February 1, 2025: Former German President Horst Köhler has passed away at the age of 81, according to an official announcement from his family and government sources.
Köhler, who served as Germany’s president from 2004 to 2010, was widely recognized for his leadership in economic and international affairs. Before his presidency, he held prominent roles, including as the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2000 to 2004.
During his tenure as president, Köhler was a vocal advocate for economic reforms and Germany’s role in global development. However, he resigned in 2010 following controversy over comments he made regarding Germany’s military engagements abroad.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed condolences, describing Köhler as “a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for Germany’s prosperity and global standing.” Other political figures and international leaders have also paid tribute to his legacy.
Details regarding the cause of death and funeral arrangements are yet to be disclosed. More updates are expected as Germany mourns the loss of its former head of state.
