The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday permitted Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to meet with his family and legal representatives.
The development follows repeated calls from his lawyers and supporters, who have raised concerns over his detention conditions and access to legal counsel. Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his extradition to Nigeria in 2021, is facing charges related to treasonable felony and terrorism.
His legal team has consistently argued that his rights have been violated, citing restrictions on visits and medical care. However, the DSS has maintained that his detention complies with legal standards.
The latest access granted to Kanu is seen as a response to mounting pressure from local and international rights organizations. His lawyers are expected to continue pushing for his release or a fair trial, while IPOB supporters continue to demand his freedom.
