Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that Nigeria experienced significant economic and infrastructural growth during the military regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB).
Obi made the remark while assessing Nigeria’s past leadership and economic policies. He noted that despite criticisms of Babangida’s administration, the period saw notable advancements in various sectors, including banking reforms, infrastructure development, and economic liberalization.
He emphasized the need for present-day leaders to adopt policies that drive national growth and improve governance. Obi also reiterated his stance on prudent government spending and accountability, urging leaders to prioritize development over political interests.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing that IBB’s policies laid the foundation for modern economic reforms, while others argue that the regime was marked by corruption and mismanagement.
