Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has opened up about the deep sense of betrayal he felt following the 1985 coup attempt led by his childhood friend and longtime colleague, General Mamman Jiya Vatsa.
In his newly released memoir, IBB narrates how Vatsa’s involvement in the failed plot shook him on a personal level, as their relationship spanned decades, from their early years to the highest ranks of the Nigerian military. Despite their close bond, Vatsa was executed in 1986 after being convicted of treason by a military tribunal.
IBB’s account offers rare insight into the emotional toll of leadership during Nigeria’s turbulent military era.
