The Enugu State House of Assembly has taken steps to address rising concerns over exorbitant house rents in the state. Lawmakers have commenced a review of the existing Landlord/Tenancy laws to protect tenants from unfair rent hikes and improve housing affordability.
During a plenary session on Monday, Speaker Uchenna Ugwu emphasized the need for a fair and balanced legal framework that safeguards both tenants and landlords. He stated that many residents are struggling with high rent costs, making housing increasingly unaffordable.
“The Assembly is committed to ensuring that Enugu residents are not exploited by unjust rent increases. We are reviewing the tenancy laws to create a fair system that benefits everyone,” Ugwu said.
The proposed amendments are expected to introduce rent control measures, regulate eviction procedures, and address issues of arbitrary increases by landlords. The House has also invited key stakeholders, including property owners, tenants’ associations, and legal experts, to contribute to the discussions.
Residents have welcomed the move, with many calling for strict enforcement of any new regulations to curb exploitative practices in the housing sector.
The review process is expected to be completed in the coming months, with the new laws aiming to create a more stable and affordable housing market in Enugu State.
