A tragic collision along the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State has claimed the lives of over 60 people, once again raising concerns about the state of Nigeria’s road infrastructure and the need for urgent reforms to prevent further loss of lives.
Reacting to the devastating incident, former presidential candidate Peter Obi emphasized the urgent need to prioritize road reconstruction, improve safety measures, and regulate the transportation of hazardous materials.
“The tragic collision on February 28, 2025, along the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State, which claimed over 60 lives, is a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need to prioritize the reconstruction of existing road infrastructure across the country, improve road safety, and regulate the transportation of hazardous materials, rather than embarking on new road infrastructure that might never be completed,” Obi stated.
He lamented the frequency of deadly road accidents, attributing many of them to the poor state of Nigeria’s highways.
“A greater percentage of road accidents today are caused by the deplorable condition of our road infrastructure,” he noted, recalling his visit to Suleja, where over 100 people were burned in a tragedy linked to bad roads.
Obi also recounted a recent trip to Kafanchan, where he and his team spent over three and a half hours navigating hazardous, life-threatening roads—an experience that further highlighted the urgent need for intervention.
As families mourn the victims of the Ilorin-Jebba accident, Obi extended his condolences to those affected, saying, “May God Almighty grant eternal rest to the departed and provide strength and comfort to their grieving loved ones.”
He called for collective responsibility and commitment from the government and citizens to prevent further senseless tragedies, emphasizing that a safer and more secure Nigeria is achievable.
“A new Nigeria is POssible!”
