In a significant move to enhance energy autonomy and infrastructure, Governor Alex Otti has signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, empowering the state to regulate its own electricity market.
The newly enacted law establishes the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA), which will oversee the state’s electricity market, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering a conducive environment for investment.
Governor Otti highlighted that the 64-page legislation is designed to support the state’s power initiatives and extend electricity access to the remaining eight local government areas not covered under the existing Aba ring-fence arrangement with Geometric Power Limited, which currently serves nine LGAs.
The governor also expressed the state’s ambition to acquire a 60% stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), aiming to enhance power distribution and reliability across Abia State.
This legislative development aligns with the state’s broader strategy to improve its energy infrastructure, attract investment, and ensure sustainable power supply for its residents and businesses.
