In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing a prolonged political crisis and governance paralysis. He announced the immediate suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the state’s situation, highlighting the demolition of the House of Assembly building by Governor Fubara and the subsequent failure to rebuild it, leading to a standstill in governance. He stated, “No responsible President will stand by without taking action. To restore good governance and peace in this circumstance, it has become imperative to declare a state of emergency.”
The President also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period. He clarified that this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with its constitutional mandate.
This decisive action comes amid escalating tensions and recent security challenges in Rivers State, including reported explosions at oil facilities. The federal government’s intervention aims to restore stability and ensure the resumption of effective governance in the state.
The political crisis in Rivers State has been a matter of national concern, with various stakeholders calling for resolution to prevent further deterioration of the situation. The declaration of a state of emergency underscores the federal government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and upholding democratic principles across the country.
