Apostle Festus Alilu, the senior pastor of Word of Power Gospel Church International in Ughelli, Delta State, has been arrested by the police following his public criticism of Pastor Korede Komaiya’s prosperity gospel teachings.
Reports indicate that Alilu was taken into custody late Thursday after he posted a video on his official Facebook page, accusing Pastor Komaiya of misleading congregants by promoting financial breakthroughs through offerings and tithes. In the video, Alilu referenced activist Omoyele Sowore’s past criticisms of certain Nigerian pastors, claiming that Komaiya’s teachings contribute to growing public distrust in Christian leaders.
Pastor Komaiya, who leads The Master’s Place International Church, is widely known for his emphasis on prosperity gospel—a doctrine that asserts faith and consistent giving lead to material wealth and personal success. His church has yet to release an official statement regarding Alilu’s arrest or the allegations made against him.
The arrest has sparked widespread debate within the Nigerian Christian community, with many questioning the limits of doctrinal criticism and the legal implications of religious disputes. Some have expressed concerns over the use of law enforcement in resolving theological disagreements, while others argue that Alilu’s statements could be viewed as defamatory.
Authorities have not disclosed whether Alilu will face formal charges, and it remains unclear if the case will proceed to court. Meanwhile, religious and legal experts are weighing in on the broader implications of the incident, particularly regarding freedom of speech and religious expression in Nigeria.
