The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of illegal structures across the state following the expiration of the amnesty deadline given to property owners. The exercise, which began on Monday, is being carried out by officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Task Force, targeting structures built on drainage channels, road setbacks, and other restricted areas.
Government Cites Enforcement of Planning Regulations
In a statement, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing urban planning laws and maintaining a sustainable environment. According to the commissioner, affected property owners were given adequate time to regularize their documents or remove the illegal structures voluntarily, but many failed to comply.
“The Lagos State Government remains determined to restore order in our urban landscape. Illegal structures not only disrupt city planning but also contribute to environmental hazards such as flooding,” the statement read.
Mixed Reactions from Residents
The demolition exercise has drawn mixed reactions from residents. While some have praised the government’s action, citing the need for proper urban planning, others have expressed concerns about its impact on displaced individuals. Some affected property owners have claimed they were not given sufficient notice or relocation options.
Demolition to Continue Across the State
Authorities have warned that the operation will continue across different areas in Lagos, with strict measures in place to prevent obstructions. The government has also urged residents and business owners to adhere to planning regulations to avoid future enforcement actions.
