ABUJA — Senator Ali Ndume has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of making lopsided appointments that allegedly violate the principle of federal character enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the Borno South lawmaker expressed concern that key positions in the federal government are increasingly being dominated by individuals from a particular region, thereby sidelining others and creating a sense of exclusion among many Nigerians.
Ndume, who is the Chief Whip of the Senate, stressed that the federal character principle was designed to foster national unity and ensure equitable representation of Nigeria’s diverse regions in the allocation of government positions and resources.
“What we are seeing is not balanced. This is not what the Constitution envisages. The appointments so far clearly show a pattern that raises concerns of marginalization,” Ndume said.
He warned that continued disregard for inclusivity could deepen distrust in government and aggravate existing divisions across the country.
The senator called on President Tinubu to review recent appointments and ensure future ones reflect the federal character principle, promoting fairness and unity in governance.
The Presidency is yet to issue a response to Ndume’s statement as of the time of this report.
