SINGAPORE — The Singaporean government on Tuesday expressed strong disapproval of the latest tariff measures imposed by United States President Donald Trump, describing them as actions unbecoming of an ally.
In a statement addressing the escalating trade tensions, authorities in Singapore said the tariffs were unexpected and unfriendly, warning that the economic consequences could be severe for small, trade-reliant nations.
“These are not actions one does to a friend,” a senior Singaporean official said, adding that the move is likely to prompt a downward revision of the country’s economic growth forecast for the year.
Singapore, known for its open and export-driven economy, has historically maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with the United States. However, the recent tariff escalation has sparked concern among policymakers and economists about potential ripple effects on global trade flows and investor confidence.
The government noted it will closely monitor the situation and adjust economic strategies accordingly while calling for dialogue and cooperation among international trading partners to avoid a full-blown trade war.
