BEIJING — The Chinese government has strongly condemned U.S. Senator JD Vance following controversial comments in which he reportedly referred to Chinese people as “peasants,” calling the statement “deeply offensive” and “racist.”
In a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday, officials described Vance’s remarks as an attack on the dignity of the Chinese people and an insult to the nation’s development.
“This kind of rhetoric is not only disrespectful, but it also reflects deep-seated prejudice and ignorance,” the statement read. “The Chinese people have made great contributions to global progress and should not be slandered by any foreign politician.”
JD Vance, a Republican senator and close ally of former President Donald Trump, made the comment during a televised discussion on U.S.-China relations. His words have sparked widespread backlash, with many calling for an apology and demanding accountability.
Chinese state media also weighed in, warning that such language could worsen diplomatic ties between Beijing and Washington at a time when relations are already strained over trade, technology, and security issues.
As of press time, Senator Vance has not issued an official response to the backlash.
