BEIJING — In a swift retaliatory move, China has raised tariffs on a wide range of American goods to as high as 125%, following the implementation of new U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced the decision on Thursday, condemning the U.S. tariffs as “unilateral and hostile actions that undermine global trade norms.” The steep increase targets U.S. agricultural products, automobiles, and various industrial goods.
Beijing emphasized that while it does not want a trade war, it will not hesitate to defend its economic interests. “The United States must take full responsibility for the escalating trade tensions,” a ministry spokesperson said.
The tariff hike marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing trade standoff between the two global powers and is expected to have significant ripple effects across international markets. Analysts warn that businesses and consumers in both countries could bear the brunt of the growing dispute.
