Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has confirmed a recent cybersecurity breach, raising concerns over the safety of customer data across its network.
In an urgent advisory issued today, the company disclosed that it had detected suspicious cyber activity targeting some of its internal systems. While the extent of the breach remains under investigation, MTN assured customers that swift containment measures were activated and law enforcement agencies have been notified.
The company urged its over 77 million subscribers to remain vigilant and avoid disclosing sensitive information such as PINs, passwords, or OTPs via phone calls, SMS, or emails, even if such messages appear to come from MTN.
“We are working around the clock to fortify our systems,” said MTN Nigeria CEO, Karl Toriola. “No core service has been compromised, but we are taking this situation seriously and leaving no stone unturned.”
MTN also encouraged users to update their apps, change passwords, and enable two-factor authentication where available. Cybersecurity experts warn that telecom users are often prime targets for phishing scams and identity theft during such breaches.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has promised to closely monitor the situation and ensure consumer protection.
