The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern ultimatum to Meta Platforms Inc. and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, demanding the payment of a $220 million fine and full compensation for Nigerian victims of alleged privacy rights violations.
In a statement released on Thursday, SERAP accused Meta of breaching the privacy rights of millions of Nigerians through the mishandling of personal data, unauthorized surveillance, and failure to adequately protect user information. The group warned that failure to comply would trigger immediate legal action both within Nigeria and internationally.
“Meta and Mark Zuckerberg must take full responsibility for the harm caused. Privacy is a fundamental human right, and the widespread violations cannot be swept under the rug,” SERAP said.
The organization also called for transparency, urging Meta to publicly disclose the steps it intends to take to remedy the breaches and prevent future violations. SERAP insists that the $220 million fine is necessary not only as compensation but also as a deterrent against future misconduct.
As of press time, Meta has yet to issue an official response to SERAP’s demands.
