President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday arrived in Ogun State to attend the eighth-day Fidau prayer in honour of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at the age of 90.
The President was received at the Gateway International Airport, Iperu, by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, alongside other southwest governors, top government officials, traditional rulers, and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Abiodun, in his welcome remarks, described the President’s visit as a “symbol of respect and shared mourning for a legendary monarch whose legacy transcends Ijebuland.”
The Fidau prayer, which held at the Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, brought together an array of dignitaries including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, former governors, ministers, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Traditional rulers from across the southwest, as well as religious and community leaders, also graced the event, paying their final respects to the revered monarch.
In his tribute, President Tinubu described Oba Adetona as a “father of modern royalty” who stood for truth, justice, and good governance throughout his 64-year reign.
“Awujale was not just a king, he was a pillar of integrity in traditional leadership. His support for democracy and his unwavering commitment to his people remain unmatched,” Tinubu said.
He urged the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State to preserve the legacies of the late monarch and continue to promote unity and development across Yorubaland.
The Fidau prayer marked the final Islamic rites in honour of the late monarch, whose death was announced last week, triggering a wave of mourning across Nigeria and beyond.
Oba Sikiru Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, ascending the throne in 1960 and earning a reputation as a fearless, progressive royal father who advocated for accountability in governance.
Security was tight in and around Ijebu-Ode, with traffic diversions in place to manage the large crowds and vehicular movements associated with the high-profile event.
President Tinubu is expected to depart Ogun State later today after private meetings with select Yoruba traditional rulers and political leaders.
