The Presiding Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has called on Nigerian leaders to immortalise former President Muhammadu Buhari for his contributions to the country during his time in office.
Speaking during a Sunday sermon at the CGCC headquarters in Lagos, Bakare described Buhari as a man whose leadership, though controversial to some, represented a significant era in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He noted that history must not overlook the role Buhari played in stabilizing democratic governance and steering the nation through complex challenges.
> “No matter our political leanings, we must learn to honour those who have led us. Former President Buhari may not have been perfect, but he deserves to be remembered for his efforts and sacrifices,” Bakare said.
The cleric, who once ran alongside Buhari as a vice-presidential candidate in 2011, stressed the importance of preserving national memory and teaching younger generations about the leaders who shaped the country.
He urged both the federal and state governments to name institutions, monuments, or initiatives after the former president as a symbol of respect and historical continuity.
Bakare’s remarks come amid renewed national conversations about legacy, accountability, and the recognition of past leaders.
