Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently criticized the Tinubu administration, highlighting the widespread hunger and hardship in Nigeria. Obi expressed deep concern over the rising food insecurity, emphasizing that many Nigerians are now “united by hunger,” with some even losing their lives in the struggle to access affordable food. This criticism came in the wake of a tragic stampede at a rice distribution event in Lagos, where several people died while attempting to buy discounted rice.
Obi pointed to the government’s failure to address the rising cost of living and the inefficiency in tackling inflation, particularly in food prices. He urged the federal government to invest heavily in agriculture, especially in the uncultivated lands in northern Nigeria, to boost food production and exports. He also called for improved security to ensure the safety of farmers, which would help mitigate the food crisis.
