CAF will not sanction Nigeria over its decision to boycott the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Libya. Nigeria’s football team refused to play the match in Benghazi after being stranded at an airport in Libya for over 16 hours and facing poor conditions. The Nigerian players, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, cited safety concerns and logistical mistreatment as reasons for their refusal to proceed, including a three-hour road trip they deemed unsafe.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal complaint with CAF, and CAF is investigating the situation. However, CAF has not imposed any immediate sanctions on Nigeria, and there has been no confirmation of sanctions against Libya either, despite calls from some figures like Victor Ikpeba for strong measures against the Libyan authorities.
