LONDON – Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has admitted that he is yet to learn Nigeria’s reintroduced national anthem, Nigeria, We Hail Thee.
Speaking on the podcast Is This Seat Taken?, hosted by Nollywood actress Chinasa Anukam, Iwobi revealed that during the anthem’s recitation before international matches, he usually stands with his eyes closed and his hand on his chest, rather than singing along.
The anthem, originally adopted at Nigeria’s independence in 1960, was replaced by Arise, O Compatriots in 1978. However, in May 2024, the Federal Government reinstated Nigeria, We Hail Thee as the official national anthem, a move that has sparked debate among Nigerians.
While some have welcomed the decision as a return to historical roots, others have questioned its relevance. Notably, activist Aisha Yesufu has publicly stated her refusal to sing the anthem, insisting that national progress should take precedence over symbolic changes.
As Nigeria’s national team continues to compete on the international stage, players like Iwobi may need to familiarize themselves with the anthem to fully observe national traditions during official ceremonies.
