
Renowned American poet, activist, and educator Nikki Giovanni passed away on December 9, 2024, at the age of 81. Known as a powerful voice in the Black Arts Movement, Giovanni’s work celebrated Black culture, empowerment, and personal reflection. Over her illustrious career, she authored over 25 books, earning accolades such as National Book Award nominations and a Grammy nod for her spoken word poetry.
Giovanni, a long-time professor at Virginia Tech, inspired generations through her writings and activism. She is survived by her partner, Virginia Fowler, and son, Thomas.
