A high-level consultative meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North-East zone ended in disarray on Monday following a controversial move to endorse President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The closed-door meeting, which brought together party stakeholders from across the North-East states, was abruptly disrupted when a motion was introduced to formally declare the zone’s support for the Tinubu-Shettima 2027 ticket. The move reportedly sparked fierce resistance from several members who argued that such a decision was premature and politically insensitive, especially in light of ongoing national challenges.
Sources at the meeting disclosed that heated arguments broke out, with some delegates accusing the proponents of the endorsement of attempting to hijack the party’s internal processes and silence dissenting voices.
One delegate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attempt as “a reckless political gamble” that could alienate party members and deepen divisions within the zone. “We cannot pretend that all is well in the country and rush to endorse anyone for a second term. The people are watching, and so is history,” he said.
The confusion forced the meeting to end abruptly without issuing a communique, raising concerns about internal unity within the APC’s North-East bloc.
Observers say the incident underscores growing unease within the ruling party over performance, governance, and public perception, especially in a region grappling with security challenges, unemployment, and economic hardship.
As of press time, no official statement has been released by the APC national leadership or the party’s North-East zonal office regarding the outcome of the meeting.
