Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta voiced frustration over recent officiating decisions, claiming inconsistency in penalty calls affected his team’s performance. Arteta contested a penalty awarded to Mikel Merino, asserting, “For me, Merino’s one is never a penalty.” He argued that if such a call stands, then Arsenal should have received one as well when Yann Sommer, the opposing goalkeeper, made head contact with an Arsenal player.
“If that is a penalty… then the one on Mikel where Sommer punches him in the head has to be a penalty 100%,” Arteta emphasized, highlighting the discrepancy.
Arteta’s comments reflect the challenges of close calls in high-stakes matches and the impact of refereeing on game outcomes.
