Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigeria’s security agencies to investigate the military-style honours recently accorded to Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. Atiku described the event as a “gross violation of military tradition,” raising concerns about the legality and appropriateness of the display.
Questioning the Legitimacy
In a statement on Sunday, Atiku questioned the recognition of the group behind the event, identified as the “Nigeria Cadet Network.” He also criticized the involvement of civilians in military-like processions, stating that such actions undermine the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Defence Headquarters Responds
In response to the controversy, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) disassociated itself from the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” clarifying that the group is not affiliated with the Nigerian military. The DHQ emphasized that military honours are reserved for designated public officials and should not be extended to unauthorized individuals or groups.
Concerns Over National Security
Atiku also urged security agencies to investigate the origin and legality of the firearms displayed during the event. He stressed the need to uphold military traditions and prevent unauthorized use of military symbols, which could have broader implications for national security.
Public Reaction
The incident has sparked widespread public debate, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over the apparent misuse of military traditions. Critics argue that such events erode the sanctity of the Armed Forces and set a dangerous precedent for future abuses.
This incident adds to ongoing discussions about the role of protocol, accountability, and the preservation of military integrity in Nigeria. Further investigations are anticipated to clarify the circumstances surrounding the controversial event.
