Parts of Northern Nigeria, specifically Kano and Kaduna, are currently experiencing a major blackout following the destruction of two key transmission towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The towers, T133 and T136, located along the critical 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines, were severely damaged by vandals, disrupting power supply to the region.
Efforts are underway to restore power temporarily through other transmission lines, such as the 330kV Kaduna-Jos line. TCN has also mobilized local vigilantes and conducted aerial surveillance in collaboration with security agencies due to the area’s vulnerability to bandit attacks. The damaged towers, which are capable of transmitting 600 megawatts of electricity each, are essential to bulk power supply in the North-West region.
The blackout comes on the heels of a recent national grid collapse, further emphasizing the fragility of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
