The National Mosque in Abuja has made history by appointing Prof. Ilyas Usman as its first Igbo Imam.
Prof. Usman, a respected scholar and community leader, is known for his commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue and unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Usman emphasized the importance of unity among all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. He stated, “As we move forward together, let us embrace our differences and work towards a more inclusive society. My goal is to foster understanding and build bridges between communities.”
The appointment of Prof. Ilyas Usman is particularly significant given the historical context of religious leadership in Nigeria. By breaking the traditional mold of leadership within the National Mosque, this move signifies a broader acceptance of diversity within the Islamic faith.
