Renowned British rapper Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Jr., has been handed a nine-month driving ban after pleading guilty to using his mobile phone while driving. The penalty was issued by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court following an incident that took place in March 2024.
Details of the Incident
Stormzy was caught using his phone behind the wheel of his Rolls-Royce Wraith in West Kensington, London. The violation was observed by an off-duty police officer, leading to legal proceedings. Initially pleading not guilty, the 31-year-old artist later changed his plea to guilty.
Court Ruling and Penalty
District Judge Andrew Sweet described Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible” during the hearing. In addition to the driving ban, the rapper was fined £2,010 and had penalty points added to his license, bringing his total to 15 points due to prior infractions.
Previous Offenses
This is not Stormzy’s first encounter with traffic violations. In a previous incident, he was cited for driving a Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted windows that allowed only 4% light transmission, far below the legal limit of 70%.
Response and Legal Representation
Stormzy’s defense lawyer conveyed the artist’s remorse and confirmed that corrective actions, such as removing the illegal tints, have been taken. The rapper has accepted full responsibility for his actions.
Public and Legal Implications
The court’s decision highlights the ongoing efforts to enforce road safety laws and discourage distracted driving. Legal experts have reiterated the dangers of using mobile phones while driving, emphasizing the risk it poses to all road users.
This development comes at a time when Stormzy has faced other personal challenges, including public scrutiny of his personal life. Despite these setbacks, the artist remains a prominent figure in the music industry.
